At 100, this man just smashed the world record for longest career at one company—here’s his secret to never retiring

Date :
Retirement at 65? Not for him! At the age of 100, Walter Orthmann has just made it into the Guinness World Records. How? This remarkably healthy Brazilian isn’t just still working—he’s now the official world champion for the longest career at a single company!

The Record-Breaking Centenarian

Retiring after decades on the job may seem like the norm, but Walter Orthmann has never been one for convention. While most people start eyeing gold watch catalogs around 65, Walter was too busy breaking records. As of January 2022, after 84 years and nine days of service in the same Brazilian company, he officially set the Guinness World Record for the world’s longest career at one company. News of this milestone only became public on April 27.

From Humble Beginnings to Industry Veteran

Born on April 19, 1922 in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, Walter faced financial challenges as a teenager. To support his family, he applied for a job at a textile factory now known as ReneauxView. Thanks to his fluency in German, 16-year-old Walter landed a position as a shipping assistant in 1938, according to reporting from NPR.

“They offered me a job as a salesman,” he recalls today. “So I headed to São Paulo, and in less than a week I had filled up the order book for three months!”

Over the years, Walter steadily climbed the company ladder, taking on more and more responsibility. He eventually became sales manager, and by the 1950s he was traveling across Brazil as part of his job. For Walter, work has always been more than a way to make a living—it’s been a purpose, a way of life, and, let’s be honest, a pretty impressive talking point at family gatherings.

The Secret Ingredient: Discipline (and Maybe a Dash of Curiosity)

What’s Walter’s secret to such extraordinary longevity and loyalty at work? He credits it all to the discipline he’s upheld for so many years. When he isn’t at the office, he leads a peaceful life, exercises regularly, and makes sure to keep his mind sharp every single day. At work, he constantly strives to stay in tune with the latest developments in the business world, keeping an eye out for changes—as intently as someone watches a pot of milk on the stove.

This daily self-examination allows Walter to keep going, year after year, in spite of the passing decades. He explains that working gives him a sense of purpose and routine, and lets him thrive in a field he truly enjoys.

Living in the Moment: Walter’s Philosophy

Walter shared his life philosophy in a statement:

“All that matters to me is that tomorrow will be another day. I’ll wake up, I’ll get up, I’ll exercise, and I’ll go to work. You have to take care of the present, not the past or the future. It’s the here and now that counts. So, off to work!”

Walter’s inspiring journey is living proof that passion, discipline, and a healthy dose of staying present can help you keep going strong—no matter how many birthdays you celebrate at the office.
