Toxic mushrooms linked to rare ALS cases: a medical mystery finally solved after a decade

Picture this: a quiet Alpine village, friendly locals, cozy dinner parties—and a medical mystery that puzzled experts for over a decade. Tucked away in the Savoie region of France, Montchavin is more famous for ski trips than health scares. But when a rare and deadly disease began cropping up unusually often among neighbors, doctors and scientists found themselves in the heart of a whodunit worthy of a crime novel—if the culprit hadn’t been hiding in the woods all along.

A Mysterious Outbreak in Montchavin

In 2009, a family doctor practicing in Montchavin, a small village near the La Plagne ski resort in Savoie, France, noticed something deeply unsettling. For the third time, she diagnosed a local resident with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Charcot disease—a rare and devastating neurodegenerative illness. Alarmed by this unusual pattern, she alerted leading specialists, igniting a thorough investigation.

The initial findings were jaw-dropping. Between 1991 and 2013, they identified 14 cases of ALS in the village—remarkable for such a small, closely-knit community. Even more striking: nearly half of those diagnosed had already passed away. What raised eyebrows even higher was that none of these patients were related. Aged between 39 and 75, they all knew each other through village life, but family links were ruled out. Now the mystery really was afoot.

Every Clue Considered—Except One

With a genetic link off the table, suspicions turned to the environment. Investigators followed every plausible lead:

  • Testing for traces of bacterial toxins or lead in the local water supply,
  • Checking radon levels in homes,
  • Monitoring air and soil for possible contamination by pesticides or heavy metals…

No factor seemed to connect the ALS cases. Just as the trail threatened to run cold, a fresh perspective swept in—from across the Atlantic.

Piecing the Puzzle: From the Pacific to the Alps

Peter Spencer, a toxicologist at Oregon Health & Science University who had investigated ALS clusters on the island of Guam, joined the hunt. In Guam, the seeds of the Japanese cycad plant (also known in the Caribbean as “petit rameau”)—traditionally used in local cuisine—had been responsible for a spike in ALS cases. Could something similar be at play in Montchavin?

Not the cycad, as it turns out, but another suspect appeared: a common wild mushroom called the false morel (Gyromitra gigas), known in English as the giant false morel. This mushroom contains toxins that act similarly to those found in the Japanese cycad. In research recently published in the Journal of Neurological Sciences, investigators revealed a critical detail: All 14 ALS patients had regularly eaten these wild mushrooms years earlier, unlike other villagers, and often at village meals.

The Dangers Lurking in Local Cuisine

Many residents in Montchavin are perfectly at home foraging and cooking local wild plants and mushrooms. Some of the ALS patients even recalled suffering severe discomfort—gastrointestinal issues and more—after sumptuous feasts featuring a mix of edible morels and the dangerous false morels. And for good reason: France banned the sale of Gyromitra gigas in 1991 due to its potential toxicity, but the tradition evidently lingered in some kitchens.

Meanwhile, this was not just a French phenomenon. In Finland, a surge of ALS cases occurred in a region where the false morel is a cherished delicacy. Across the world on Guam, however, ALS rates dropped sharply once cycad seeds vanished from local dishes. The verdict? Maybe think twice before serving up false morels at your next friends’ dinner.
