Climbing, Dancing, and Breaking the Rules
It all kicked off on November 22, when social media was ablaze with viral videos showing a Spanish woman scaling the famous steps of the Kukulcan pyramid, one of the treasures of Chichén Itzá. And she wasn’t just climbing! Once she reached the top, she struck poses for photos, flashed a big smile, and broke into a short dance for TikTok. Unfortunately for her, what goes up must come down—and in this case, not so gracefully. The woman’s performance didn’t impress the crowd below, who expressed their disapproval with plenty of boos and whistles.
A Monument with Strict Boundaries
The Kukulcan pyramid isn’t just a random set of ancient rocks. As a UNESCO World Heritage site and recognized as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, it’s both sacred and strictly protected. Climbing these revered archaeological remains without authorisation is a big no-no—it’s illegal, and anyone caught doing it risks a fine as high as €5,000 (about $5,400 at current exchange rates). Not exactly a cheap TikTok stunt!
The Crowd Reacts
As the tourist made her way back down, the atmosphere turned even more heated. The crowd began chanting in unison,
“Prison, prison!”
Once she was at the base of the pyramid, things got a little out of hand. According to witnesses, she was pushed, whistled at, doused with water, and even had her hair pulled. Some spectators, obviously aware of the pyramid’s bloody past, went so far as to suggest she be handed over to the gods as a sacrifice—though fortunately, only joking (we hope?).
Consequences for Breaking Sacred Rules
Ultimately, the Spanish tourist and her companion were promptly escorted off the archaeological site. Local police later arrested them and opened formal proceedings against them for their actions. So, while her TikTok dance might have racked up views, the consequences are likely to be more memorable—and more expensive—than any viral video.
